Trichoptera or Caddisflies are a diverse group with hundreds of different species. These consist of large predatory species, a variety of cased species to smaller cased algae feeders. Most species have a life cycle of approximately one year and are therefore relatively abundant year round depending on local conditions prevailing at the time. The trout will therefore take avantage of this abundance and for most of the year caddis will appear in the diet. It makes sense to have a few caddis imatations in the fly box.

Shaun Wyatt will demo one of these imatations.

This fly is successful in local streams like the Nogongotaha, Waititi and also local stream mouths in the summer time.

The Club has many trophies and all members are encouraged to compete for these. We hold a Trophy Presentation evening each year which is very popular and well attended. These trophies not only acknowledge fishing skills (or luck) but writing and photographic skills as well.

Every Friday night – club rooms open for drinks and conviviality. Guests are welcome.

Kids Fishout August 2010

The second Kids fishout for 2010 was held today. It was a dismal day with unrelenting rain (See first image of Rotorua) and flooding in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. In spite of the conditions 121 young anglers braved the elements to learn to cast a fly and catch a trout from the Fish and Game Pond. Below are some of the images captured during the second Kids fishout of 2010.

Just a quick reminder that fly tying is on Monday 9^th of August

Reg Quinn will demo the Pheasant Tail Nymph.

Pheasant tail nymph

The Pheasant Tail Nymph is steeped in history and is still an awesome performer today. Any river fisherman (or woman) needs a few doz of these lined up in their flybox!

Reg will demo the original method of tying these nymphs, originated by Frank Sawyer using only pheasant tail and wire. Plus he’ll demo the regular tying method with thread.
